When you’re studying, every penny counts. From content insurance to rail travel, you need the best deal. You can get 1/3 off the cost of eligible train tickets all over Great Britain with railcards for students. Here’s everything you need to know.

What is a 16-25 Railcard?

The 16-25 Railcard (also known as the Student Railcard or Young Persons Railcard) is a discount card for rail travel. Invest in one and you’ll get 1/3 off eligible train tickets in Great Britain.

Students can use the Railcard on Standard Anytime, Off-Peak, Super Off-Peak Single and Return tickets, as well as Standard Class and First Class Advance tickets. Are you studying in London? You can also link your Railcard with an Oyster Card to get 1/3 off Off-Peak travel around the capital.

How Much Does it Cost?

As you’d expect, railcards for students aren’t too pricy. A one-year Railcard costs £30 or you can get a three-year card for £70.

Who Can Use A 16-25 Railcard?

Anyone aged 16-25 can use the Railcard, and it’s especially popular with students looking for cheap travel.

When Can I Use My Student Railcard?

One of the great things about this Railcard is you can use it at any time for peak and off-peak travel. There are some rules though:

  • Travelling between 4.30am and 10am Monday to Friday? A minimum £12 fare is payable.
  • There is no minimum fare at weekends, on Public Holidays, or during July and August.
  • You can’t use railcards for students to buy a season ticket.

How Do I Buy a Student Railcard?

The easiest way to buy a student Railcard is via the Trainline app. Don’t have it? You can download it here.

Once you’ve downloaded the app, follow these steps.

Step 1: Tap ‘Buy 1-year for £30’ or ‘Buy 3-year for £70’ (if applicable) to select the student Railcard you want.

Step 2: Enter your first and last name, and your date of birth.

Step 3: Upload a photo for your Railcard. This should be a digital passport-style shot.

Step 4: Sign in to your Trainline account or create an account if you don’t have one. Follow the instructions to by your Railcard.

Step 5: You can access your Railcard under ‘Railcards’ in the Account tab on the app.

Step 6: To book a journey with your new Railcard, enter your departure and arrival station, select the start date of your ticket and the number of people travelling. Then select your Railcard from the dropdown menu. The 1/3 discount will be automatically applied to your booking.
