MSC Nastran is a structural analysis software used by engineers to simulate and predict how their designs will behave in the real world. There’s a student version which is free for students on engineering programs. Here’s how to get Nastran for students.
What is MSC Nastran and what is it used for?
Developed for NASA in the late 1960s, Nastran is the most widely used Finite Element Analysis (FEA) solver. Put simply, it allows engineers to accurately predict how designs would work in the real world. The ability to ensure structures have the strength to withstand excess stresses without buckling or become deformed in any way is important for safety and function. It also saves money on producing countless physical prototypes and allows engineers to remedy any defects or optimise designs right out of the gates.
What kind of projects can I use Nastran for students for?
Basically, you can use it for a range of projects where static, dynamic, or thermal analysis is needed. For example, one important application could be using it to analyse flight loads, which is an essential aspect of aircraft design from the early conceptual stage to the flight test.
